What many don&#8217;t realize is that, with the right dedication and hustle, their work AS STUDENTS can make it all the way to Sundance\/Slamdance. Director Jonathan Langager&#8217;s thesis film Josephine and the Roach is\u00a0premiering\u00a0at Slamdance today. Below are his notes.)<\/em><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/sundance.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-181\" title=\"The tools of the trade\" src=\"http:\/\/sundance.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo7-e1358520721715.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sundance.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo7-e1358520721715.jpg 640w, https:\/\/sundance.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo7-e1358520721715-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Greetings from Park City. I\u2019ve just arrived after a day of traveling (the last stretch being a very long and chilly shuttle trip from Salt Lake City).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I\u2019m here screening my thesis film\u00a0\u201cJosephine and the Roach\u201d at Slamdance. The first screening is tomorrow (January 18th) at 12:30pm, the second is on Monday at 2:00pm.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I\u2019ve been looking forward to this trip for quite some time. Well, for me\u00a0\u201clooking forward\u201d resides in the blurred boundary between nervous excitement and abject terror. Park City, after all, is to filmmakers what the Vatican is to priests. It\u2019s holy and somewhat mysterious&#8211; a place where powerful people gather\u00a0to do powerful things. Saints are canonized. Films are financed.\u00a0Drinks are imbibed. Hence the anxiety.\u00a0\u201cNetworking\u201d does that to me.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>But, I\u2019ve packed my screeners, postcards, and business cards.\u00a0I am ready. If I hand these things to all of the fancy people that I meet, I will have done my job. And so, now that I\u2019m actually here and somewhat prepared, my nervousness- the clammy palms and knotted stomach- has subsided.\u00a0\u201cLooking forward\u201d has become just that. I am looking forward to\u00a0the screenings, the Q&amp;As, the Filmmaker Sled-off, the Hot Tub Summit, and the countless hours spent talking with filmmakers about film.
